The San Joaquim Fairgrounds at Stockton in California were opened in the 1860s and have always been a popular, well-attended Fair. Although informal races may have been part of the programme even in the early days, betting became illegal in the State in 1909 and racing lapsed until the San Joaquin Fair racecourse held its inaugural meeting on 21st August 1933, with the organisers being rewarded with a crowd in excess of 1,500. By 13th August 1934 the Stockton track had introduced a pari-mutuel betting system on its 8 furlong oval track, with separate 6 furlong and 10 furlong chutes sharing a 306 metre home straight. The principal race at the track is the Pink Ribbon Handicap, and for the next 55 years thoroughbred, quarter horse, and harness racing were an integral part of the Fair in August, until in 1988 the Fair moved to the middle of June. The track competed keenly with the Pleasanton Racecourse, but in 2016 racing ceased at Stockton Racetrack. |
